We’re a youth-led organisation based in Melbourne’s west striving to create better outcomes for African-Australian young people

Our story

ASPYA Foundation (previously the African Youth Initiative) was born out of the tragedy of youth violence. The founding members Robiel Abraham, Malou Lueth, Sobur Dhieu, Abak Dhieu and Aken Angok created the organisation in the weeks following the death of their childhood friend, Machar Kot, in 2020.

Harnessing the largely untapped power of youth-led action, ASPYA Foundation was determined to disrupt cycles of disadvantage and disengagement contributing to increased antisocial behaviour in young people. Our journey started with running community-based sports and mentoring programs and has since grown to a full-service organisation offering school programs, mentoring and case management support for young people at risk or engaged in youth justice, hosting community events, sporting programs and partnering with research institutions to drive better outcomes for young people.

We are advocates for gender equity, creating safe spaces for women and girls to grow in confidence and leadership potential. We elevate African-Australian young people excelling in music, academia, leadership and the arts and contribute to the economic and cultural development of our communities by sponsoring grassroots causes we care about.

Our story has been shaped by the outpouring of support from our community and likeminded organisations and individuals. We are excited to continue to partner with you to help shape a world in which African-Australian young people reach their fullest potential.
